In 2018 my health became so poor that I was hospitalized for over a month. The results of events that happened over just a few hours caused my life to transform from routine to upside down and would never be the same again.
After weeks of treatment, I had the rude discovery that continuing to be an employee was not the safest way for me to support my new lifestyle. Although it was emotionally crippling to understand how easily I was replaced, I was more fearful of how I would be able to financially contribute to my family without working for someone else.
Now faced with a large decision, I worried endlessly about if I should attempt to put myself back into the workforce or if I should take a risk that I could be of value in the free market and become self-employed.
I recognized that both of these choices have possible benefits and downfalls so I went about doing the work to discover what my true motivation was for making such a drastic change.
When the book ‘Find Your Why’ by Simon Sinek came out in 2017 I had already been introduced to the concept of gathering reasons or motivations to support my goals or visions (hello, I'm a lifelong list-maker) and love my vision board exercise. But what set his concept apart was that Sinek proposed that we can all narrow down our WHY to one core desire.
I admit that it took a while for me to get past all the “fluffy” reasons that I wanted to be self-employed instead of choosing to work for someone else. Fluffy might be too whimsical of a word, but in this case, it describes the very surface-level descriptions of why people “think” that being self-employed is a dream:
I can wake up without an alarm clock
I don't have to follow a dress code
I can take personal calls any time of the day
I can choose my schedule
I don't have to ask permission to take a vacation
I don't have to follow anyone else's rules
All of those are TRUE and great reasons to be self-employed, but they don't get to the heart of WHY you have those reasons and why those reasons appeal to you.
The core reason I was choosing self-employment over becoming an employee - SAFETY.
Of all those I can depend on and have control over, it is myself.
Now safety has a lot of nuances. Safe body, environment, emotion, finances…
As someone that is becoming self-employed for the first time, it can feel especially scary. There are a lot of unknowns.
What is critical to be mindful of is your WHY.
Your Why becomes the overarching reason and your guiding light at the end of the tunnel when you feel scared of the unknown.
When you are sure that your Why is worthy of going through the experience of being fearful to learn or do new things - you will be unstoppable.
